You borrow a million dollars to buy a house and its value drops to $750,000 and then you lose your job. You have a problem. On top of that your pension policy, likely what is called in the US a 401K, and other savings are largely in equities and they have dropped by a third or more. Then to try and boost the economy interest rates have dropped to near zero so the little cash you have left is earning nothing. Misery.

Punching its weight 

 

     

Madam Zhang, already well known in the leather industry as Chairman of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) was recently elected President of the International Council of Hides Skins and Leather Traders Association (ICHSLTA).  Many might feel that this represents further the belief that China is beginning to ‘punch its weight’ on the international leather industry.

The APLF Fashion Access and APLF-MM&T fairs ended April 2nd in Hong Kong with encouraging numbers, while innovation, newness and a strong fashion focus fostered an energetic mood.

Latin American leather industry hit by collapse in demand 

 

     

The leather industries in Brazil and Argentina have been knocked sideways by the fall in demand for all types of leather. Both countries export mainly to China, their largest customer by far. Latest statistics indicate that Brazil’s leather exports declined by a whopping 60% in January 2009 compared to the same month in 2008 and, in the same period, Argentina’ exports fell by 50%.
