BLC Seminar Series

Three popular seminars, Sourcing Leather with Confidence, Understanding Leather and How Safe is My Leather, which were jointly organised by the APLF & BLC were held on 23-25 Sept 2008 in Hong Kong.  Mr Barry Wood who had more than 30 years experience in the global leather business was once again the speaker at these three seminars.  The seminars attracted more than thirty managers of reputable brands, retailers and manufacturers from the fashion industry, including A. T. Cross, Azona, Prada, Toyland, The Children's Place, Griffin Technology and Mimosa.  Participants also benefited from small group discussions.  Closer relationship is being built between the speaker and attendees.

The first day of the seminar, Sourcing Leather with Confidence, is designed for those who were looking for a comprehensive overview of the leather industry as it is today.  Delegates learned about the use of leather and it's advantages, the cost drivers and the key commercial issues in today's market, the "ECO" issues, which were rapidly entering the leather product market, the current issues relating to hardware corrosion, the update on current market issues and how to avoid mould, color migration and brand damage.

The second day of the seminar, Understanding Leather, was specially designed for those who bought leather product, shipped leather product or just want to know more about leather.  The speaker explored topics such as how leather was made from start to finish: recognise leather (and what is not leather!); basic quality and some of the common problems associated with leather; performance and product construction issues; testing leather to ensure it was 'fit for purpose' and finally how to take care and maintain it.

The last day of the seminar, How Safe is My Leather, was specially designed for senior decision makers in sourcing, merchandising, environmental compliance or technical teams.  The seminar explored different types of fungicides and allergens, how to manage risk effectively, prevent claims and ensure customer safety, how to avoid brand damage and how to implement RSL policies and strategies.
