Colombian Tanners Thrive at APLF - MM&T

Five leading Colombian tanneries exhibited at APLF - Materials, Manufacturing & Technology (MM&T)2008 in Hong Kong. They were showing a wide range of leather for all major applications: all were satisfied with the fair and the results.

Long term exhibitor Americana de Curtidos was present for the twelfth consecutive year and according to company director, Gonzalo Salazar, had yet another successful participation at the event. Americana is certified with ISO9000 and ISO14000 as quality guarantees to their customers and supplies finished leather to world renowned footwear manufacturers.

Cuertiembre Búfalo from the coastal city of Barranquilla and its sister tannery Curtiembres De Itagui both made positive comments on the 2008 APLF - MM&T fair. "This is just excellent," stated Itagui's export manager Juan Squires. Processing more than 2 million sq ft of leather per month makes Itagui one of the largest tanneries in Colombia. This tannery exports world wide and has been doing so for around 35 years.

Mr. Squires' export counterpart from Búfalo, John Fredy Salazar commented that firm orders had been taken and that it was impossible to even take time out for lunch on the first day due to the constant flow of customers and visitors coming to the stand. Búfalo produces a wide range of leather for the footwear, leather goods, automotive and upholstery industries selling its products worldwide.

New exhibitor Curtiembres Fagarcia was founded 30 years ago and produces leather for the footwear, leather goods and related industries. Export manager, Dagnober González had a positive first experience at APLF - MM&T. He said that there had been many new buyers and that they would be busy following up all enquiries upon returning to Colombia.

First time exhibitor Diseño y Piel supplies finished leather for footwear and leather goods and semi finished leathers for automotive and upholstery. Company president Jorge Ramírez was satisfied with the company's first participation at APLF - MM&T and in the past had exhibited at All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) on two occasions.

Despite the strength of the Colombian peso in the last two years against the US dollar, Colombia's exporting tanneries have maintained their presence and markets in face of stiff competition from other nations. This is a prime example of how quality, service and innovation can sell in the face of theoretically negative factors.

Colombia's tradition of producing excellent leather for all applications was fully demonstrated at APLF-MM&T 2008. To contact any of the exhibiting companies covered in this report please refer to the following list.
